English translation

1656. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: 'How much of the month has passed?' We said: "Twenty-two (days), and there are eight left." The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: "The month is like that, and the month is like that, (and the month is like that), three times, and he withheld one finger the last time." (Sahih)

Commentary

He demonstrated the counting with ten fingers twice, and a third time with nine fingers, and made it clear that a month is also of twenty-nine days; it is not necessarily thirty days. There is no decrease in reward for the fast of a month in case of it being twenty-nine days.
