Commentary

This commandment is for an obligatory fast. The intention for a voluntary fast may be declared any time in the day; likewise a voluntary fast may be broken at any time in the day, and there is no sin for it, as follows in the next Hadith. Some of the scholars consider this to apply to fasting, when making up for obligatory fasts, fasting of vows and fasting for making expiation etc.
