1736. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbās that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth day (of Muharram) too." (Sahih) Abu 'Ali said: "It was reported by Ahmad bin Yunus from Ibn Abu Dhi'b. He added in it: 'Fearing that he may have missed'Āshurā'!'"
1736 - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَئِنْ بَقِيتُ إِلَى قَابِلٍ، لَأَصُومَنَّ الْيَوْمَ التَّاسِعَ» قَالَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ: رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، زَادَ فِيهِ: مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَفُوتَهُ عَاشُورَاءُ

Fasting on the 9th of Muharram means the Prophet ﷺ intended to fast onthe 10th of Muharram along with the 9th, to make distinction from the fastof people of the Book, and to have the reward for fasting on the best daytoo.
