Text and translation

English translation

1870. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbās that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "A widow has more right (to decide) concerning herself than her guardian, and a virgin should be consulted." It was said: "O Messenger of Allāh, a virgin may be too shy to speak." He said: "Her consent is her silence." (Sahih)

Commentary

The consent of the girl must also be regarded in matters of her marriage, and at the same time, the permission of the guardian is necessary too. The virgin girl, if she does not express her consent verbally out of bashfulness, her silence will be regarded as her approval, provided that her silence was not because of anger.
