Text and translation

English translation

1889. It was narrated that Sahl bin Sa'd said: "A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: 'Who will marry her?' A man said: 'I will.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Give her something, even if it is an iron ring.' He said: 'I do not have one.' He said: 'I marry her to you for what you know of the Qur'an.'" (Sahih)

Commentary

There is no minimum amount of dowry fixed. An ordinary usable thing may be fixed as dowry as long the woman agrees. A non-material benefit can also be a dowry, as Musa ﷺ served his in laws and tended to their goats for ten years. (Al-Qasas 28: 27-29)
