Commentary

Only a person well versed in the rules of Shari'ah concerning all important matters of life can achieve the blessings of this world and the next. This underlines the importance and need of acquiring the knowledge of religion. It also highlights the lofty position of teachers of religion. However, the only people capable of delivering this knowledge to the people after the passing away of the Prophet ﷺ are the scholars of religion. The Messenger of Allâh was himself a teacher, as the Qur'an says: "And he (the Prophet) will instruct them in the Book and wisdom" (2:129). The term Hikmah (translated as wisdom), used in the Qur'an, stands for the understanding of the religion, namely the laws and rules of the Islamic jurisprudence.
