English translation

2815. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbâs said: "The Prophet ﷺ passed by some people who were shooting (arrows) and said: 'Shoot, Banu Ismâ'il, for your father was an archer.'" (Sahih)

Arabic text

2815 - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِنَفَرٍ يَرْمُونَ فَقَالَ: «رَمْيًا بَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ فَإِنَّ أَبَاكُمْ كَانَ رَامِيًا» بَابُ الرَّايَاتِ وَالْأَلْوِيَةِ

Commentary

Archery is a praiseworthy hobby. All the games that are useful in Jihâd have the same rulings. Calling different tribes and clans with a common name develops love, unity, and brings harmony among them. Calling grandparents and great-grandparents as 'father' is allowed.
