English translation

2851. It was narrated from Habib bin Maslamah that the Prophet ﷺ awarded one third (of the spoils of war) after the one fifth (had been taken).[1] (Sahih)

Arabic text

2851 - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ جَارِيَةَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ «نَفَّلَ الثُّلُثَ بَعْدَ الْخُمُسِ»

Commentary

A commander of an army has the right to grant a special award to a group of soldiers, besides their right in booty, for their distinguished achievements in war. This reward is granted from the 'one fifth' of the booty. 'After the one fifth' means taking one fifth of the booty for the treasury, the rest is divided among the fighters.
