Text and translation

English translation

3328. It was narrated from 'Ubaidullāh bin Abu Rāfi', from his grandmother Salma, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "A house in which there are no dates is like a house in which there is no food." (Hasan)

Arabic text

3328 - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ سَلْمَى، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «بَيْتٌ لَا تَمْرَ فِيهِ، كَالْبَيْتِ لَا طَعَامَ فِيهِ»

Commentary

Dates consist of complete nutritive values. So, a person can live on them even if there is no other food. One may store his needed food stuff in its season for the whole year. The hoarding which is forbidden is that the businessmen hoard up the food, which the public needs, to sell it at a higher price. The Hadith gives the lesson of being content. If one owns dates then he does not need to store many types of food stuff.
