Text and translation

English translation

3759. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "If a man were to fill his stomach completely with pus until it destroyed him, that would be better for him than filling (his mind) with poetry." (Sahih) Except that (one of the narrators) Hafs did not say: "until it destroyed him."

Commentary

Admiring good poetry and listening to it purposely is allowed, even if it is from a non-Muslim. Good poetry means that which is free from disbelief, polytheism, dissoluteness and lewdness.
