Text and translation

English translation

4034. It was narrated from Abu Dardā' that my close friend ﷺ advised me: "Do not associate anything with Allāh, even if you are cut and burned. Do not neglect any prescribed prayer deliberately, for whoever neglects it deliberately no longer has the protection of Allāh. And do not drink wine, for it is the key to all evil." (Hasan)

Commentary

Polytheism (setting partners with Allah) is the greatest sin, so it should be avoided in all circumstances, no matter how severe they are. Sacrificing one's life for the sake of monotheism (Oneness of Allāh) is a cause of great pride. The greatest sin after polytheism is neglecting prayers, which is similar to disbelief. Drunkenness covers one's mind, thus it becomes easy for such a person to commit any sin. Therefore, a Muslim should avoid all kinds of intoxicants.
