a. 'Deadens the heart' means that emotions of hardness instead of softness, cruelty instead of mercy and injustice instead of justice overcame it. In addition, love for goodness and hatred of evil disappear from a dead heart. b. Being cheerful is a good habit and highly appreciated in Islam, but neglecting important things and being busy only in fun and amusement is a sign of negligence and death of the heart. It is natural to feel pain while others are in trouble and to share in their joys and sorrows, this being the sign of a living heart.
