English translation

4236. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "The ages of (the people in) my nation will be between sixty and seventy, and few of them will exceed that." (Hasan)

Arabic text

4236 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَرَفَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: «أَعْمَارُ أُمَّتِي مَا بَيْنَ السِّتِّينَ، إِلَى السَّبْعِينَ، وَأَقَلُّهُمْ مَنْ يَجُوزُ ذَلِكَ»

Commentary

People in previous nations used to live a very long time. Compared to their life span, the average age of people in this nation is very short. So, we should use this short span of life in doing good deeds. The Prophet ﷺ, said: "Allāh will not accept the excuse of any person whose instant of death is delayed till he is sixty years of age." (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 6419)
