Arabs had open sandals, i.e., that they had only one or two small leather straps over the soles of their shoes. It was, therefore, not necessary to take off the shoes for wiping over the socks. The Hadîth can be acted upon even today in the case of plastic slippers etc. The report also speaks of wiping over the socks and the shoes separately, which means that he did both in turns, i.e., either wiping only over the socks or wiping over the strapped shoes alone.
