Text and translation

English translation

603. It was narrated that Umm Salamah said: "I said, O Messenger of Allāh! I am a woman with tight braids. Should I undo them when I take a bath to cleanse myself from the state of sexual impurity?" He said: "Rather it is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over them, then pour water over yourself, and you will be purified," or he said: "In that case you would have become purified." (Sahih)

Commentary

Much like men, women are also required to wet the skins of their head along with their bodies while taking a bath from sexual impurity. However, she can have the ritual shower without undoing the braids of her hair if they are bound tightly. In case the hair is loose or loosely tied, she must wash them well.
