English translation

68. It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not (truly) believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread the greetings of Salâm amongst yourselves.'" (Sahih)

Commentary

Imân is an essential requirement for entry into Paradise. Mutual love is a means of gaining complete faith. We must, therefore, do all those things that promote mutual love and avoid things that would generate mutual hatred. Greeting each other with Salâm is a good way of establishing and maintaining good relations with each other. Other Ahâdith speak of the other things as well, such as shaking hands, hugging and exchanging presents with each other. (See Muwatta' Imâm Mâlik: 1731 & Adabul-Mufrad: 594)
