English translation

758. It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commanded that mosque be built in (Ad-Dur) villages,[1] and that they be purified and perfumed. (Sahih)

Arabic text

758 - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ سُعَيْرٍ قَالَ: أَنْبَأَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، «أَمَرَ بِالْمَسَاجِدِ أَنْ تُبْنَى فِي الدُّورِ، وَأَنْ تُطَهَّرَ وَتُطَيَّبَ»

Commentary

Having just one central mosque in a city or town is not enough. There must be a mosque in each district so that the Believers may perform congregational prayer with facility and ease. It is in order to build a mosque at some distance from the other. b. 'Perfuming' here means burning incense or some other substance producing a sweet odor.
