Commentary
It is not permitted to come running to the mosque in order to catch up with the prayer.
'Walking with tranquility' does not mean to move at a snail's pace as if prayer had no value for him.
A person joining the prayer at a stage where the Imām has already completed one Rak'ah or two, must not follow the Imām in saying the concluding salutation (Salām), but say it after completing the missed part of his prayer. In his book Subulus-Salām, which is a commentary on the well known Hadith book Bulughul-Marām, Imām Amīr San'ānī says: There is divergence of opinion among the scholars as to whether the part of Salāh the late comer performs with the Imām should be reckoned as his initial Rak'ah or the final ones. The truth, however, is that these are to be reckoned as his initial Rak'ah. And Allāh knows best.
