[3743] 1 - (1492) Sahl bin Sa'dAs-Sâ'idî narrated that 'UwaimirAl-'Ajlânî came to 'Âsim bin'Adiyy Al-Anshârî and said to him:"O 'Asim, what do you think, if aman finds a man with his wife, should he kill him and be killedby them in return? Or whatshould he do? O 'Asim, ask theMessenger of Allâh ﷺ about thatfor me." So 'Âsim asked theMessenger of Allâh ﷺ. TheMessenger of Allâh ﷺ did notlike this question, and hecriticized it so much that 'Âsimfelt very upset by what he heardfrom the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ.When 'Âsim went back to hisfamily, 'Uwaimir came to himand said: "O 'Asim, what did theMessenger of Allâh ﷺ say toyou?" 'Âsim said to 'Uwaimir:"You did not bring me any good. The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ didnot like the question that I askedhim." 'Uwaimir said: "By Allâh, Iwill not rest until I ask him aboutit." So 'Uwaimir went to theMessenger of Allâh ﷺ who wasamidst the people, and he said:"O Messenger of Allâh, what doyou think, if a man finds anotherman with his wife, should he kill him and be killed by them in return? Or what should he do?" The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "(Verses) have been revealed concerning you and your wife, so go and bring her." Sahl said: "They engaged in Li'an, and I was among the people who were with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. When they had finished, 'Uwaimir said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, I would be a liar if I kept her now.' So he divorced her three times before the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ could tell him to do anything." Ibn Shihāb said: "Then that became the practice of those who engage in Li'an."
