English translation

[56] It was narrated that Zuhair said: “Jābir said” - or “I heard Jābir say: ‘I have fifty thousand Aḥādīth, and I have not narrated any of them.’ Then one day he narrated a Hadīth and said: ‘This is one of the fifty thousand.’”

Arabic text

وحَدَّثَنِي حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ زُهَيْرًا، يَقُولُ: قَالَ جَابِرٌ - أَوْ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرًا - يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ عِنْدِي لَخَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ حَدِيثٍ، مَا حَدَّثْتُ مِنْهَا بِشَيْءٍ»، قَالَ: ثُمَّ حَدَّثَ يَوْمًا بِحَدِيثٍ، فَقَالَ: «هَذَا مِنَ الْخَمْسِينَ أَلْفًا»
