Text and translation

English translation

1220. It was narrated that Zaid bin Arqam said: "We used to speak to each other during the prayer, saying whatever was necessary, at the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, until this verse was revealed: Guard strictly (five obligatory) Aṣ-Ṣalawāt (the prayers) especially the middle Ṣalāh (i.e. the best prayer - Aṣr). And stand before Allāh with obedience (and do not speak to others during the Ṣalāh (prayers)),[1] so we were commanded to be silent." (Ṣahīh)

Commentary

1. "We used to talk if need be or when it was necessary": for instance returning greeting, supplication upon sneezing, elucidation of matter concerning prayer, etc.; they did not talk about household chores or business. 2. "Guard strictly the prayers - especially the middle one": It has been earlier said that it denotes the Aṣr prayer.
