Text and translation

English translation

1404. It was narrated that Salmân said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said to me: 'There is no man who purifies himself on Friday as he is commanded, then comes out of his house to the Friday prayer, and listens attentively until he finishes his prayer, but it will be an expiation for what came before it the week before.'" (Sahih)

Commentary

1. Ablution is obligatory for Jumu'ah, while taking a bath is emphasized or strongly recommended. Hence, if the expression has been commanded means compulsory, then in this it signifies ablution. And if it is taken to mean optional, then it would connote Ghusl. 2. The above-mentioned superiority is due to all those acts, which have been mentioned in this narration. Since remaining quiet also forms part of it, the superiority is ascribed to it.
