Text and translation

English translation

1895. It was narrated that Umm 'Aṭiyyah said: "One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ died and he said: 'Wash her three times, or five, or more than that if you think that (is necessary). Wash her with water and lotus leaves and put camphor, or some camphor in it the last time. And when you have finished inform me.' We informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said: 'Shroud her in it.'" (Sahîh)

Commentary

"He threw it", so to say he did not hand it out or pass it, this was because Allāh's Messenger's ﷺ hand did not touch any marriageable woman throughout his life. This is the precaution of the highest order, which he ﷺ adopted with a view to teaching his nation.
