1977. It was narrated that Imrân bin Ḥusain said: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said to us: 'Your brother An-Najāshī has died, so get up and offer the funeral prayer for him.' So we got up and formed rows to pray for him, as rows are formed to pray for the dead, and he led us in praying for him as people pray for the dead." (Ṣaḥīḥ)

Commentary
"As people pray for the dead": Formation of ranks for the performance of funeral prayer is a popular and undisputed issue. The usage of the term Ṣalāh for the funeral service itself provides evidence that besides compliance to the specific commands for the funerals, the entire set of rules concerning the ritual prayer would be applied to it, for instance, facing the Qiblah, performing ablution, straightening of the ranks, and the recitation of Al-Fātiḥah, etc.
