English translation

2503. It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ enjoined Sadaqatul Fitr upon male and female, free and slave; a Ṣâ' of dates or a Ṣâ' of barley." He said: "The people considered that equivalent to half a Ṣâ' of wheat." (Ṣaḥîh)

Commentary

Sadaqatul Fitr is absolutely obligatory, but upon those who have the capability (who have the necessary amount in excess of what one needs to feed oneself and those who one is obliged to support). The one who himself is poor deserves to receive.
