English translation

266. It was narrated that 'Abdullāh bin Salimah said: "I came to 'Alī with two other men and he said: 'The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ used to come out of the toilet and recite Qur'an, and he would eat meat with us and nothing would prevent him from (reciting) Qur'an except Janābah.'" (Hasan)

Commentary

1. For reciting the Qur'an, ablution is not necessary. That being said, the majority of scholars hold that ablution is essential for touching a copy of the Qur'an. Their opinion, however, is not strong. 2. According to the majority of scholars, reciting the Qur'an while in a state of major ritual impurity is forbidden. Some others say that the narration is weak and that, even supposing it to be authentic, the Prophet's action - the action of refraining from reciting the Qur'an while in a state of major impurity - does not establish a prohibition.
