2878. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbâs said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said on the day of the Conquest of Makkah: 'Allâh, the Mighty and Sublime, has made this land sacred, and it was not permissible to fight therein for anyone before me. It was permitted for me for a few hours of a day,
and it is sacred by the decree of Allāh, the Mighty and Sublime.” (Sahīh)

Commentary
Mounting an attack on Makkah is absolutely not permissible for anyone, because there is certitude of bloodshed, and bloodshed in the Sacred Precinct is forbidden. Permission sanctioned to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was on account of compulsion or under forced circumstances. The House of Allāh was under the control of the associators (Mushrikîn) or the polytheists. Had it not been liberated from them, Shirk might not have been obliterated.
