Commentary

‘Āishah ﷺ was under the impression that consequent to breast-feeding or fosterage, the infant’s relationship is established to the woman, because it has suckled from her. But it does not have any relation with the woman’s husband, because the infant has no connection with him. The woman, nonetheless, lactates as a result of a man’s intercourse with her and her pregnancy with his child. Therefore, the relationship of the breast-fed infant would be established with both the woman and her husband. And this is the intent of the name of the chapter; that the milk is a result of the father.
