English translation

3792. It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The oath[1] by which the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ used to swear was: 'No, by the Controller of the hearts.'" (Sahih)

Arabic text

3761 - أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الرُّهَاوِيُّ، وَمُوسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: " كَانَتْ يَمِينٌ يَحْلِفُ عَلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَا وَمُقَلِّبِ الْقُلُوبِ "

Commentary

The relevance of this phrasing is that to remain steadfast upon one's oath depends upon the strength and the perseverance of the heart. And the heart happens to be in Allâh's control.
