English translation

4281. It was narrated that Az-Zuhrî said: "Ibn As-Sabbâq said: "Maimûnah told me that Jibrîl, peace be upon him, said to the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ: 'We (Angels) do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture.' The next day the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ commanded that all dogs be killed, even small dogs." (Saḥīḥ)

Commentary

1. 'Do not enter' scholars say that it refers to the angels of mercy. Otherwise, the Recording Angels, the Guarding Angels, and the Angels of Death do enter every house. 2. 'Picture' means the picture of a living being, because pictures or portraits are often worshipped, irrespective of whether they are in the form of statues, photographs, or hand-painted portraits. But it is so when the pictures are hung or mounted with reverence; for instance, they are hung on walls or they are on curtains.
