4557. It was narrated from Abū Sa'eed Al-Khudrī and Abū Hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ appointed a man in charge of Khaibar and he brought some Janīb dates. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Are all the dates of Khaibar like this?” He said: “No, (by Allāh, O Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.) We take a Ṣā' of these for two for three Ṣā's (of other types of dates).” The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Do not do that. Sell the mixed dates for Dirhams then buy the Janīb dates with the Dirhams.” (Ṣaḥīḥ)

Commentary
The Janīb was a variety of superior dates; and Jam' used to be of inferior quality, which did not contain a stone. Or Jam' might mean mixed variety of dates; some of this variety, some of this variety, some of that. Since in Khaibar, portions of various varieties of dates were levied, therefore, they were mixed.
