Commentary

1. The distinction between a Muslim and a disbeliever is the prayer. Prayer is an integral pillar of Islam: through it, a Muslim's identity is established. 2. The person who abandons prayer indulges in disbelief - because the one who never performs the prayer, has abandoned Ṣalâh altogether. Apparently there appears to be no distinction between him and a disbeliever. 3. Between a slave (Abd) of Allâh and between disbelief there is nothing but the abandonment of prayer, because through the abandonment of prayer the distinction of being a Muslim ends. Hence, his association with disbelief becomes pronounced.
