52. It was narrated from 'Abdullâh bin 'Abdullâh bin 'Umar that his father said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ was asked about water and how some animals and carnivorous beasts might drink from it. He said: 'If the water is more than two Qullahs, it will not carry filth.'"[1](Sahîh)

Commentary

1. The objective of the chapter is to define the limit of the abundance or plentiousness of water. It is important to know that limit, for when a container or source of water reaches it, in terms of quantity, it does not become impure even if small quantities of impure substances get mixed into it, provided its color, smell, and taste do not change. 2. The quantity of water held in two Qullahs was five hundred Ratil, which according to the modern system of measurement comes to about two hundred and twenty-seven liters.
