English translation

5291. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbâs that the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ took a ring and put it on, then he said: "This distracted me from you all day, shifting my gaze from it to you (and back again)." Then he threw it away. (Sahîh)

Commentary

It appears it was a gold ring. Its description has preceded above too, because of it, the Prophet's ﷺ attention was distracted. He, therefore, did not think it proper to continue to wear it. From this, it transpires that one should not wear a ring merely for the sake of adornment. See Hadith 5277.
