English translation

7. It was narrated from Abū Hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Were it not that it would be too difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the Siwāk at (the time of) every Ṣalāh.” (Ṣaḥīḥ)

Commentary

1. This proves that using a Miswâk (tooth-stick) is not obligatory, and is not an actual component of ablution. It is, nonetheless, a highly recommended (Mustahab) practice. 2. "At (the time of) every prayer" means the afternoon prayers (Zuhr and Asr) as well. This proves that, when one is fasting, and when one offers either of the afternoon prayers, one may clean the inside of one's mouth with a Miswâk. 3. At the time of every prayer signifies that making use of the Miswâk is recommended also at the time of every Salâh.
