Text and translation

English translation

704. Ubaidullâh bin 'Abdullâh reported that 'Aîshah and Ibn 'Abbâs said: "When the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ was on his deathbed, he had a Khamîṣah over his face. When his temperature rose, he would uncover his face. While he was like that he said: 'May Allâh curse the Jews and Christians, for they took the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.” (Sahih)

Commentary

If the graves of polytheists are removed and their skeletons are taken out and disposed off, a mosque may be built there. But the graves of the Muslims, the righteous, the Prophets, etc. deserve respect. Such graves should not be removed, and mosques should not be built in their place.
