Allâh's Messenger ﷺ was himself the Imâm (the prayer-leader) and since there was no one on his left, he placed his shoes on his left. If someone happens to be on one's left, shoes should not be placed on the left side. It is explicit in Hadith. We also learn from this narration that, sometimes, one may pray while not wearing shoes.
