English translation

1597. It was narrated that Abū Hurairah said: "Umar came in when the Ethiopians were playing in the Masjid. 'Umar, may Allāh be pleased with him, rebuked them, but the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Let them be there, O 'Umar, for they are Banu Arfidah.'" (Sahih)

Commentary

The mosque is not meant for games and sports. But since this game was not futile, and they were rather playing with spears and daggers, which are the sources of the Muslims' combating energy - it was, therefore, allowed in the mosque.
