Text and translation

English translation

1924. It was narrated that Abû Ma'mar said: "We were with 'Alî and a funeral passed by him, and they stood up for it. 'Alî said: 'What is this?' They said: 'The command of Abû Mûsâ.' He said: 'Rather the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ stood up for a Jewish funeral but he did not do it again.'" (Sahîh)

Commentary

The venerable 'Alî ﷺ is talking about his own knowledge and his personal visual experience. Otherwise narrations containing the mention of Allâh's Messenger's ﷺ standing up (at the sight of a Janazah) have explicitly been handed down from the Companions. The verbal narrations are in addition to it, which include every sort of Janazah. These narrations are given preference. The most that can be derived from the narration of 'Alî, and Ibn 'Abbâs (which follows) and the like, is that standing up is not compulsory.
