Text and translation

English translation

2052. Anas bin Mālik said: "The Prophet of Allāh ﷺ said: 'When a person is placed in his grave and his companions depart from him, he hears the sound of their sandals. Then two angels come to him and make him sit up, and they say to him: What did you say about this man? As for the believer, he says: "I bear witness that he is the slave of Allāh and His Messenger. Then it is said to him: Look at your place in Hell, which Allāh has replaced for you with a place in Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'And he sees them both.'" (Sahīh)

Commentary

1. The arrival of the angels, making him sit, and his interrogation and other matters are conditions that belong to the state of Al-Barzakh. The life of Al-Barzakh or the intermediate period, is beyond our intellect and perception. 2. "About this person" denotes the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
