Text and translation

English translation

3166. It was narrated from Al-'Irbâq bin Sâriyah that the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: "The martyrs and those who died in their beds referred a dispute to our Lord concerning those who died of the plague. The martyrs said: 'Our brothers were killed as we were killed.' And those who died in their beds said: 'Our brothers died on their beds as we died.' Our Lord said: 'Look at their wounds; if their wounds are like the wounds of those who were killed then they are of them and belong with them.' And their wounds were like their (the martyrs') wounds." (Hasan)

Commentary

What is outwardly apparent is that this dispute will take place before entering the Paradise, in front of the Lord of the worlds. The basis of this dispute will not be with any grudge or envy, rather the martyrs would wish that the rank of those who had died of plague will be elevated, and they should remain with us. On the other hand, those who had met their death upon their beds would desire that if they (who had died of plague) are getting the rank of the martyrs, we should also be given it, because they equal us in death.
