Commentary

Qust and Azfâr are the kinds of incense, which were used in that period of time. The ruling concerning other perfumes is also the same; the use of which is forbidden during the waiting period. Their use, however, at the end of menstruation is permitted. Qust means costus (ūd); a certain substance or perfume, Indian wood and also Arabian, with which one fumigates. Azfâr is a certain odoriferous substance called unguis oderati. It is black, resembling finger nails.
