Commentary

'Pledge of allegiance to fight to death': Taking an oath to fight till death also means the same thing that 'we would remain steadfast and would not flee from the battlefield, even if fatal conditions befall.' The purpose of Jâbir ﷺ is 'we did not say at the time of taking an oath that even if we die in the course of it; we had merely said that we would not flee from the battlefield.' In a way, there is a difference between the implied meaning and its result. It is possible some of the Companions might have uttered the word death, saying, 'we will not flee from the battlefield even if we die' as is elucidated in the forthcoming narration, or perhaps this is how they interpreted it.
