4886. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbâs said: "Şafwân was sleeping in the Masjid with his Ridâ' beneath him, and it was stolen. He got up, and the man had gone, but he caught up with him, seized him and took him to the Prophet ﷺ, who ordered that his hand be cut off. Şafwân said: 'O Messenger of Allâh, my Ridâ' is not worth cutting off a man's hand for.' He said: 'Why did you not say that before you brought him to me?'" (Sahîh)
Abû 'Abdur-Rahmân (An-Nasâ'î) said: Ash'ath is weak.

Commentary
'It is not worth cutting...': It was assuredly precious as it appears in the forthcoming narration, it was of thirty dirhams; and the hand could be amputated in less than this. But he imagined that the hand is something very precious. Its indemnity amounts to fifty camels. It ought not to be chopped off for a theft of thirty dirhams.
