English translation

515. It was narrated from Abū Hurairah, may Allāh be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever catches up with two Rak'ahs of 'Asr prayer before the sun sets, or one Rak'ah of the Subh prayer before the sun rises, has caught it.” (Sahīh)

Commentary

1. The significance of the Hadīth is that the beginning of the prayer is what counts and not its conclusion. This means that if one inaugurates his prayer within its valid time and completes one of its units, his prayer is valid. It will not be considered as having been a missed or late. 2. If such a situation arises, setting of the sun or its rising, while still he is praying, would not invalidate his prayer. He ought to continue with his prayer and complete it. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars.
