English translation

5315. It was narrated from 'Umar that he did not allow the wearing of silk except (something) the width of four fingers. (Sahîh)

Arabic text

5313 - أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مِسْعَرٌ، عَنْ وَبَرَةَ، عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، ح وأَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ «لَمْ يُرَخِّصْ فِي الدِّيبَاجِ إِلَّا مَوْضِعَ أَرْبَعِ أَصَابِعَ»

Commentary

In the previous narration, there is mention of two fingers; in this there is four. The majority of the people of knowledge consider a four finger wide strip is permissible; not more, because no narration has come giving permission for more than this.
