English translation

1588. Mālik narrated from Az-Zuhri, that Sā'ib bin Yazīd said: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ took the Jizyah from the Zoroastrians of Bāhṛain, and 'Umar took it in Persia, and 'Uthmān took it from the Persians." (Ḥasan) I asked Muḥammad about this, so he said: "It is: 'Mālik from Az-Zuhrī from the Prophet ﷺ.'"

Commentary

A tax (Jizyah) is imposed on non-Muslims living in a Muslim country against the security and protection provided to them to live in peace. They are supposed to help the Muslims in defense of the country as well as paying the tax.
