English translation

1965. Abū Mas'ūd Al-Anṣārī narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: "A man's spending on his family is charity." (Sahīh) [Abū 'Eisā said:] This Hadīth is Hasan Sahīh.

Arabic text

١٩٦٥ - حَدَّثَنَا ‌أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ‌عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ ‌شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ ‌عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ ‌عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ ‌أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «نَفَقَةُ الرَّجُلِ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ صَدَقَةٌ» وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، وَعَمْرِو بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ الضَّمْرِيِّ، وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ. هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

Commentary

Taking care of the upkeep and maintenance of one's family is the legal and religious duty of each person which he can never leave. However, if he takes it as a bounden duty and a part of his quest for winning Allāh's pleasure, it will be an act of charity and shall fetch generous reward from Allāh.
