English translation

2202. Thawbān narrated that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "When the sword is imposed on my Ummah, it shall not be removed from it until the Day of Resurrection." (Ṣaḥīḥ)[Abū 'Eisā said:] This Hadīth is [Hasan] Ṣaḥīḥ.

٢٢٠٢ - حَدَّثَنَا ‌قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ‌حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ ‌أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ ‌أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ ‌أَبِي أَسْمَاءَ ، عَنْ ‌ثَوْبَانَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا وُضِعَ السَّيْفُ فِي أُمَّتِي لَمْ يُرْفَعْ عَنْهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ» هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ.

Commentary

The first use of the sword to settle the scores among the Muslim people was made for the assassination of 'Uthmān ؓ and the Ummah is still suffering from its consequences.
