Commentary
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ did not expressly appoint anyone his successor, although he left broad hints in favor of Abū Bakr ﷺ. Abū Bakr ﷺ, in his turn, nominated 'Umar ﷺ for the office. 'Umar ﷺ appointed a panel and charged it to elect a caliph from amongst themselves. However, the task of selecting the successor could as well be assigned to the accredited representatives of the community.
